Ravens decor pushes energy to high level

BALTIMORE - There’s a reason people go nearly crazy when their hometown sports team nears the championship level.

“It’s a tremendous amount of fun,” New York-based sports psychologist Richard Lustberg said. “The fact that they are going crazy takes people away from their everyday headaches. They can focus on the Ravens instead of the baby pooping.”

By dressing in team colors or wearing outlandish costumes, fans feel as though they are connecting one-on-one with the players, he said.

“The only way to get close to [the players] is by mimicking them, or wearing a jersey or helmet, or waving a flag or towel,” Lustberg said. “It only becomes abnormal on that particular day when you’re suppose to be a work and don’t go, and the boss gets upset with you.”

On game day, people of like minds create a “seismic energy in the stadium by being with people who share the same goal,” he said. “It’s a phenomenal experience. It’s contagious.”

But the fanatic fan also helps the team, Lustberg said.

“These people are coming pre-loaded,” he said. “It’s a happening — an event. People go crazy and the amount of energy these people give, the players feed off of that energy.”

It’s true, said Megan Collins, coordinator of events and entertainment for the Ravens.

“They are a huge support in the game,” Collins said of the fans. “They know when to cheer. They are quiet when the offense is on the field and cheer when the defense is on. We want to thank them.”

To spread the fan feeling, Collins said the team is “painting the town purple.”

On Friday, people are encourage to wear purple to work and to school to show support for the team before the playoff game begins.

“The energy is felt by the team,” Collins said. “It would be hard to do some of the stuff the team has done this year without their help. They are so loyal; it’s wonderful.”
