Going cold turkey without NFL is hard

JEFFREY FLANAGAN
The Kansas City Star

Emptiness. Withdrawal. Depression.

If you’re an NFL fan, there’s probably a terrible void in your life now that the Super Bowl is over. You’re wondering how you’ll make it until training camp opens in July.

“There’s actually a concern there,” New York sports psychologist Richard Lustberg said by phone.

“Football and the NFL actually provide some needed structure in our lives. It gives us a routine, and we need routines. They’re beneficial. So, when that routine is altered or taken away, we need to fill that void in a positive way.”

But how? It’s not like the Pro Bowl will help. And we’re more than two months away from the draft.

Should we reconnect with our loved ones? Do we actually have to talk again with our girlfriends or wives?

“That would imply that there wasn’t communication during the season,” Lustberg said. “And that brings up more serious issues. Besides, all the research shows that the NFL is very popular with women.

“You know, it’s not like the football season is a tour of duty and you’re just now coming home to be with your loved ones.”

Still, what can we look forward to? How do we fill the gap?

“Well, if you’re an overall sports fan, the sports calendar does provide some relief,” Lustberg said. “You have pitchers and catchers reporting in a week or so. You have March Madness, you have opening day.

“And the NFL really does a good job of maintaining your interest throughout the offseason. There is free-agency, then the schedules come out, then the draft, then minicamps, then regular camp.

“It’s kind of like the NFL gives you little methadone hits to get you through the withdrawal.”

More on Thomas

SI.com’s Paul Zimmerman on why the pass rushers didn’t get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: “They all canceled themselves out. Fred Dean, Richard Dent, Derrick Thomas and Andre Tippett were all great. But how do you distinguish between them? It wasn’t easy.”

From SI.com’s Peter King: “Derrick Thomas has a tough road to Canton, I believe. His presenter, Bob Gretz, does a terrific job stating Thomas’ case, but my feeling is that more than a few people in the room think he was a one-dimensional player.”

Desi and Juan

Former Royal Desi Relaford worked out recently for the Rangers, who have yet to offer him a contract. Relaford did not play in 2006. … Former Royal Juan Gonzalez wants to make a comeback, as you probably know. He needs 66 home runs to reach the 500 mark. But even though MLB.com reported that the Angels, Tigers and Orioles all had an interest in Juan Gone, the teams quickly came out this week and denied any interest.
