Miss gets fans' goat

Doug Brien may go down in Jets' all-time hall of shame after shanking the second of two field goals, which would have beaten the Steelers.
After blowing two potentially game-winning field goals, Jets kicker Doug Brien was the obvious goat as Gang Groan's season once again ended before the Super Bowl.

But while some Jets fans want to give Brien the boot, others refused to kick a kicker while he's down.

"I'd fire him off the roof," said Lee Routledge, 55, of Manhattan. "He cost them, big-time. You can't do what he did under those circumstances and come back to play again in this town."

Nodding in agreement, Dan Kleiman predicted Brien will not be back after ruining the Jets' Cinderella season in Saturday's 20-17 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"He's probably done for in this town," said Kleiman, 37, of the upper West Side.

But other Jets fans wouldn't make the hapless kicker into a scapegoat for an overachieving team that ran out of miracles.

"It wasn't his fault," said Doug Rosen, who blamed the Jets coaches for playing too conservatively in both series leading to Brien's clunkers.

"You're going to roll the dice on a kick like that with the season on the line?" asked Rosen, 39, of the West Side. "Come on!"

At Time Out on the West Side, Jets fan David Burns skewered the team for a "complete offensive meltdown," in the moments leading up to both of Brien's botched boots.

"I don't blame him whatsoever," said Burns, 29, of Norwalk. "He should never have been put in that position."

Max Dalglish said he'd give Brien one more chance - but dump him if he doesn't prove he can nail the big kick.

"He got us into the playoffs," said Dalglish. "But he's going to be our downfall if he doesn't get it together."

Dr. Richard Lustberg, a sports psychologist, predicted the loss would live on for years in the minds of Brien, fans and the Jets, whose only Super Bowl win was 36 long years ago.

"It's crushing and it's absolutely going down in the history of lost opportunities for the Jets," said Lustberg. "It's hard to believe he's not going to think about it for the rest of his life."

But Dr. Allan Lans said the mark of a successful NFL kicker is bouncing back from heartbreak.

"Pro athletes have an ability to put these things behind them," said Lans, a former team psychologist for the Mets. "What makes a pro is the ability to come back and say, 'That's not going happen to me again.'"
